One of my Spiritual Companioning clients regularly contacts her legislators, both local and national, to make sure her voice is heard. This is her way or dealing with her sense of helplessness about the larger political system. That one or several contacts means far more than only one person’s comments because there are so many who do not act. Spending this minimal time requires knowing who your legislators are and how to contact them. I personally have been a phone banker for the Democratic party as are many I know. Some go door to door. There are others who are active poll workers.
Several people I know are active in the League of Women Voters, which is a non-profit, non-partisan, national organization with many local chapters. They host hundreds of events and programs to educate others about candidates. They distribute millions of educational materials about elections. They are one of the most powerful ways to get involved at the local level, knowing that your efforts also have a national impact.
Several non-profit, grass roots organizations could use your financial contributions, such as Move-On org, which tracks and publicizes current liberal events. The Sunrise movement is a group of largely young people committed to liberal causes. The list of organizations dedicated to creating a healthier, more just and equitable planet is long and full of need. Your participation matters.
